Abstract

This research is motivated by a problem regarding students' often finding some difficulties in writing descriptive texts even though they have been guided by their teacher to write them. This study aims to analyze students' ability to write descriptive texts in junior high school. Writing is a process involving knowing how to process words and sentences and paragraphs into good writing. There are five components in writing, namely content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive design with a qualitative descriptive. The tested test, in this case, was used to measure the level of the student's ability to write descriptive texts. The technique of analyzing descriptive text is: 1) The researcher and the teacher analyzed the descriptive text that had been made by the students based on the assessment according to Brone (2007); 2) The researcher calculated the scores obtained by students using the Brown (2007) formula; 3) The researcher analyzed the scores obtained by students; 4) The Researcher analyzed student scores based on categories. The result shows that grade 8C students at SMP Stanislaus Surabaya could write descriptive texts in a good category with an average total score of 69,9. In addition, 13 students could write descriptive text in the very good category, 8 students in the good category, 2 in the medium category, 3 in the less category, and 3 in the good category. very poor category. The results of the study also show that 2 students got a perfect score with a score of 100. This showed that the ability of the two students to write descriptive texts was very good because they could develop the ideas they had and arrange words and sentences correctly. On the other hand, 2 students did not write descriptive texts but instead wrote report texts. The majority of difficulties faced by the students of 8C at Stanislaus Surabaya in writing descriptive texts were in grammar and developing ideas from storylines.
