Abstract

Putra (2020) says that people can convey information and ideas, express opinions or feelings, and share experiences by speaking with others. Speaking is one of basic language skills. To speak, people need a language. According to Rabiah (2018), language is a communication tool used daily to convey information and arguments to others. Therefore, speaking skills are crucial for any language learner. According to Fahira (2022), speaking English is complex and many factors make it difficult. Similarly, Faizah and Fitria (2021) state that there are many problems faced by students in speaking that can affect their performance. Palijama (2020), who also conducted a study on the speaking problems, states that students face some problems both lingustically and non-linisticcally. Regarding these issues, this study aims to identify the speaking problems faced by the English Department students and how they overcome the problems. This research is a descriptive mixed-methods (qualitative and quantitative) study. The participants in the study were the English Department students belonging to batch 2021. The researcher used a questionnaire consisting of fifteen closed-ended adapted statements and interviewed three students who had a low scores in speaking class to collect the data. The findings revealed that first, the linguistic problems of English speaking faced by the students were lack of mastery on grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Whereas the non-linguistic problems of English speaking faced by the students were low confidence, nervousness, fear of making mistakes, and short-term memory. Second, to cope with problems, the students learned independently by watching English videos and podcasts on Youtube about how to learn to speak English. If they did not have a partner to practice speaking with, they could use their phones and record themselves to evaluate how well they spoke in English. By so doing, the students could add their knowledge about grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
