Abstract

This research puts Indonesia in the headlight in its effort to fight sustainability through product-oriented Product–Service Systems (PSS) implementation. First, this research explores the Indonesian government support for sustainability. This is followed by examining the Indonesian motorcycle network existing implementation of product-oriented PSS. The paper then investigates the drivers and barriers of the product-oriented PSS implementation to improve sustainability by a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with thirteen senior managers from five Indonesian motorcycle companies–manufacturers, intermediaries and service partners. This study found key criteria for manufacturer to meet sustainability are waste management, decreasing the hazardous material uses, design for disassembly, increase the recyclable materials, take back and recycling policy, while for intermediaries and service partners are providing service, repair, maintenance and decreasing the hazardous material uses. Finally, through literature review, several recommendations about the role of government to tackle the barriers were given based on the previous studies. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by offering a new insight of improving the sustainability through the product-oriented PSS implementation by knowing the drivers and the barriers.
