Abstract

The researcher interested in analyzing Mad Hatter in “Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland” because of his uniqueness and eccentric behavior. Also, to find the reasons he is called Mad Hatter, when the original author never used the term ‘mad’. The researcher used the deconstruction theory by Jacques Derrida in deconstructing the Hatter’s characteristics. The research findings conducted by re-reading the novel to support the interpretation of the Hatter’s unique characteristics, to determine the binary oppositions of the characteristics of the Hatter depicted in the novel, and to find which side is more privileged. Also, the researcher analyzed the interactions of the other creatures with the Hatter as supporting evidence of the researcher’s findings. The researcher used descriptive technique to discuss the findings of the study. The study found that the Hatter was actually intelligent and polite, which was different from the Hatter’s stigmatized characteristics – mad and rude.
