Abstract

During my sixth semester, I got the chance to do an exchange program. I studied in the United States for four months and acquired lots of good experiences, including experiences in developing my English competence in the United States. For that reason, it pursued me to conduct this research which has two objectives: (1) What Critical Events happened during my study in the United States? (2) What investments I deployed in developing my English Competence? To write the research, an auto-ethnography method is used as a tool to retell authentic experience in developing my English competence in the United States. However, to acquire the “trustworthiness” of the data, artefacts were presented as the data of the critical events as well as the data of investments in developing my English competence. The findings show that each of the events that I encountered helped me in developing my English competence gradually. The investments that I made; self- confidence enables me to use English more often as I was not afraid to use English due to the judgment as a non-native speaker as well as my identity as an Indonesian and practice my English competence in the social context continuously.
