Abstract
This study analyzes the idiolect used by the minor character of ‘Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets’ a novel by J. K. Rowling, in speaking to other characters. The study under report is attempted to answer the following research questions. (1) What idiolect does Hagrid frequently use? (2) What factors influence Hagrid’s idiolect? The data of this study are taken from the utterances of the minor character of the novel named Hagrid. The data are analyzed by using linguistic features, i.e. diction and grammar which are divided into sentence structure and word structure. Besides, the data are also analyzed on the basis of social factors in correlation with social dimension and also the social and regional characteristics as the parameters. The findings show that: (1) Hagrid’s frequently used idiolect in communicating with other characters is informal–standard English. The informal-standard dialect is approved by the linguistic features. Hagrid’s idiolect consists of: (a) colloquial diction usage, (b) correct sentence structure and (c) eye dialect. (2) The factors that influence Hagrid’s idiolect are dependent factors and independent factors. The dependent factors include the social factors in correlation with social dimensions i.e. closed participants, settings, topics and function of the communication. The independent factors include the social and regional characteristics i.e. education, socioeconomic status, age, and residential area. Both the dependent and the independent factors affect and lead Hagrid in having the idiolect: informal-standard English. The writer realizes that this study is not perfect and there must be several weaknesses such as the pronunciation of Hagrid that cannot be analyzed because of the data. Therefore, she hopes that there are other students who intend to conduct sociolinguistics studies focusing on dialect of a particular character. The further researchers can conduct studies on the film version of Harry Potter series novel. The next researchers, then, can study the pronunciation of Hagrid by recording and transcribing Hagrid’s speech.
