Abstract

In the middle of 1997, banking in Indonesia faced an economic crisis that also occurred in the other part of Asia. The economic crisis caused financial distress condition in a lot of commercial banks in Indonesia. Even thought Indonesian's government tried to prevent the impact of financial distress condition, it didn't work well. Financial distress at bank can be anticipated by measuring its monetary ratios. There are two approaches can be used to calculate the financial distress and to differentiate kinds of banks in Indonesia, that is CAMEL, and EAGLES. CAMEL's ratios relevant to analyze financial distress are CAR, ROA, NPL, ROE, LDR, BOPO, CR and QR. And the EAGLES consist of ROA, ROE, AQR, PPD, PPP, CAR, RMI, and RDTPT. And the other ratios are CATL, CLT A, NIM and RETA. By using these ratios, banks in Indonesia can be classified into two kinds, recapitulation and non recapitulation banks. Those ratios above can be used not only to calculate financial distress in a bank and differentiate kinds of banks but also to predict financial distress in recapitulation banks and non recapitulation banks in the future. But, one thing should be remembered is financial ratio variables not be able to stand alone without basic analysis. That's why to calculate or to predict financial distress accurately, discriminant analysis is used. For instance, this research compared financial distress based on discriminant analysis in three recapitulation banks with in three non recapitulation banks during certain period, from 2000 to 2004. As a conclusion after calculating each ratio, Quick Ratio and PPD is better to be used for predicting financial distress in recapitulation and non recapitulation banks.
