Abstract
Learning a foreign language is seemingly difficult for the students of senior high school and adults. Their failure could be seen in the result of Ujian Nasional 2006 and grammar test of the teachers of SMP 10 Surabaya. It seems that they cannot adopt the appropriate ways to learn a foreign language like tense, aspect, and translation. The researcher conducted translation to teach aspect and tense to the subjects. The subjects of this thesis were the teachers of SMP 10 Surabaya. To measure the effectiveness of teaching tense and aspect to the subjects, he used two tests before and after the treatments. He also used some tenses such as past tense, past progressive, past future, past perfect, past progressive and some authentic materials to prove the effectiveness of teaching tense and aspect by using grammar translation method. The result of such treatments was very significant. All the participants could gain the understanding of aspect of such tense by using grammar translation method in one month.
