Abstract

This paper is a literature review of Pierre Bourdieu’s writings that are relevant to journalism. This paper aims to propose Bourdieu ‘s concepts such as arena, habitus and capital to be used as an alternative perspective in understanding the dynamics of journalistic practice. There are two things that make Bourdieu’s thoughts relevant to study in the context of journalism. First, Bourdieu’s perspective is still rarely used to understand, trace, or investigate the dynamics that occur in journalistic practice. This is unfortonate because Bourdieu’s theories can be used to reveal the various dynamics that occur in journalistic practice. Second, Bourdieu’s theoretical orientation is able to open up space to understand journalistic practice without being trapped in a rigid perspective dichotomy between political/ organizational/cultural economic perspectives and cultural studies perspectives. Bourdieu’s key concepts can be used to reveal the complexities of journalistic practice that is ignored by each perspective. Bourdieu’s key concept can also prevent researchers from the danger of reducing journalistic practice to just a macro process (such as politics, economics, or culture based on objective social structures), or vice versa only to a micro process (based on subject freedom or creativity). In other words, Bourdieu’s key concept can be used as an analytical tool capable of connecting the interplays between journalistic practice and the political, economic, social, or cultural structures that surround it.
