Abstract

A human being needs to communicate with others because he has to interact with the society. In order to communicate with others, human being needs a means of communication that is called language. Almost all activities that reinforce social relations such as conversations and interviews involve language to interact. It means that without language, social interaction can hardly be created among the members of the society. In the society there are many form of communication. One of them is conversation. In conversation there are some aspects such as who is talking to whom, about what and in what kind of situation. In the boarding house where the writer stays, the girls often talking about boys, films and sometimes gossiping someone. Although the writer's friends come from different places and study at different faculties (some of them are studying in the engineering faculty and other are in English department), they can follow the conversation well and it seems that there is no misunderstanding between them. Therefore, the writer was interested in analyzing the conversation among her friends. The writer uses Grice's four maxims: maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner to analyze the conversations Grice formulate these maxims as a guideline of or the effectiveness use of language. The subject of this study is Widya Mandala female students staying in the same boarding house at Jalan Kalijudan Barat 2/28. The writer recorded the conversations among her friends secretly so the data could be real and natural. Then the writer chose five conversations to analyse. Out of six conversations recorded, the writer only used five conversations because one of them was not very clear. This study is intended to find out whether the conversations among the female students are effective according to Grice's maxims. It is also intended to find out what maxim is mostly violated in the conversations. The result of this study showed that conversations 1 until 5 are quite effective. It means all the participants in this conversation follow Grice's maxims. Although there is a violation in one of the maxims, it is still acceptable A Grice (1975) said if a speaker breaks one maxim of the Cooperative Principles that does not necessarily meant hat he or she fails to communicate with his hearer. The writer also found out that the madam of quantity is the most frequently violated one in the conversations, reaching as much as 20.48%. Next is the maxim of manner on the second position with only 2.41% violation The last is maxim of relevance which was violated by 1.20% of the participants only. On the other hand, maxim of quality appears as the maxim that is obeyed by all of the participants. In other words all of the participants follow this maxim. After conducting this study, the writer drew a conclusion that ideally, to communicate effectively one should consider the quantity, quality, relevance and manner of his or her speech. The writer realized that her study is far from being perfect so it is suggested that the future researchers who deal with Discourse Analysis especially about Grice's Maxim cover a wider scope of the area of analysis so that they can get more complete result.
