Abstract
Language is a very important aspect of human life. In the process of language development, literature is used as language enrichment. A novel entitled “Wonder” is used for analysis in this thesis. The novel will be analyzed using the objective theory (Abrams, 1953). As the method used is the objective theory, the writer herself is the main instrument of the study. She will observe the novel to find the intrinsic elements, then she will analyze the novel to answer the research questions. The main subject of the study is Olivia Pullman. She is chosen because people often misinterpret Olivia as a girl who is only seeking attention. However, the truth is her love for August is genuine, and she does not ask anything in return. In this research, the writer will analyze the novel to clarify the statement. She will observe how Olivia expresses her ‘love and affection’ and how August reacts to her attitude. The novel “Wonder” tells a story about a boy named August. He was born with a facial deformity. In the story, August faced many challenges in his new school because of his appearance. Despite her own problems, Olivia shared love and affection that greatly helped August. The results pointed out that Olivia had been a great impact for her brother. She protected him from bullies, gave her concern to him, comforted him, expressed her love and affection directly, gave advice, relented to him, put him as her top priority, helped him, and even managed to make him back to school. Without her help, he would not be able to achieve anything. August’s reaction was quite unpredictable. At first, he reacted with his ego, but in the end, he realized that he survived in the environment because of his sister. He started to obey and love his sister more. Although the writer has collected numerous data, she has not found some aspect from the novel. Therefore, she suggests the future researcher to conduct further research about the other elements that might be found in the characters inside the novel.
