Abstract

In learning English as a foreign language (EFL), students have to learn vocabulary and its meaning as vocabulary helps them to understand what they hear, to speak in communication, to understand written text and to construct good sentences in writing. In academic field, the words that should be known by the students are academic words compiled academic words widely used in academic textbooks and journals named academic word list. For secondary students, course book might be one of the tools to get inputs in term of vocabulary. As a key component in language class textbooks have a significant role on language classes. Considering the important role of course book and the necessity of academic vocabulary in a course book, the present study aimed to analyze Academic Words in Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas XII. This study investigated the Academic Words List (AWL) in Buku Bahasa Indonesia Kelas XII. The researcher applied a corpus-based research to explore the word frequency of AWL in Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas XII. The tool is Web Vocabulary Version 4 (Cobb, 2013). All the words appearing in the 16 chapters of the book were analyzed; excluding the foreword, glossary and the references. Before entering the data into the profiler, the data should be standardized based on the Vocabulary Profiler’s word identification. Variants were removed, word irregularities were standardized, misspelling were revised, and grammatical mistakes were ignored. The study revealed that the AWL in Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas XII accounted for 5, 82 % out of 28.472 running words. The study also found the huge differences in frequency of first two sublits in comparison to the rest (accounting for almost 50% of the whole occurrences). The result shows that the AWL in the course book is insufficient and the sublists distributions in Buku Bahasa Inggris is not balanced. The study revealed that the English course book, Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas XII, contained the AWL which distributed in all 16 chapters. However, the number of the AWL is insufficient for the students learning at secondary level. Therefore, the results of the study can contribute some implications for teachers and book publisher, especially, it is necessary for English teacher to teach AWL explicitly and provide them with sufficient examples.
