Abstract

Since 1994, the Indonesian government has changed the curriculum especially the one for the elementary school. Before 1994, some schools had given English to their students. However it was not included as a local content subject. But now, it is one of the elective subjects included in local content subject in elementary school. In addition, English is taught starting from the fourth grade. While the objective of teaching English to the elementary school students is to provide them with the four skills in English (speaking, reading, listening, and writing) based on their ability. Factually, there are some elementary schools who give English to the first, second and third grade students. Since it is not a local content subject, there is no curriculum for teaching English to those grade. The teachers do not have much choice in choosing a good material for their students, because although there are many textbooks that are available for them, not all are good. Based on the background above, this study is intended to develop English materials for those who don't have curriculum for the subject. Specifically, for the third grade of elementary school students who have had English when they were in the first and second grade. Moreover, the writer based her study on Dick and Carey's theory. The procedure has helped the writer to organize the material, so that the material will be easier and interesting to study. The findings of this study make the writer realize that teachers can make their own material for their students. The materials written in this study can be applied to teach English for the third grade of elementary school students.
