Abstract

The use of Indonesian now is more influenced by the Jakarta dialect in people's daily communication, especially for the teenagers. The writer found this phenomenon among the SMU female students in Surabaya. Based on this statement, the writer took an observational study. It is aimed to get the statements of the subjects in using the Jakarta dialect in their daily life. In conducting this study, the writer, as a passive observer, observed the students of SMU 2 Surabaya. The observation was done by interviewing the subjects. The interview was recorded by the writer without telling the subjects in order to have a natural conversation. Next, he transcribed the recorded conversations to find the words that can be included in the Jakarta dialect. The subjects, then, were given some questionnaires that have to be answered. The analysis of the findings showed that the subjects are accustomed of using the Jakarta dialect. Moreover, the subjects use Jakarta dialect only to certain people and in certain places. In line with this statement, the subjects also gave their personal reasons of why they use the Jakarta dialect. The writer found that the Jakarta dialect exists regularly in the conversation and it shows intimacy and identity. At last, the writer hopes that the findings of this study could give a better information about the use of the Jakarta dialect among the SMU female students in Surabaya.
