Abstract

In teaching reading, the teacher should provide the students with many kinds of reading materials. The teacher should be able to choose a course book that is relevant for the students’ level. Language and content of the reading passages in the course book affect the readability level of the passage. Reading passages as the reading material in the course book should be readable for the students’ level. This study was conducted to analyze the readability level of reading passages in “Bahasa Inggris” course book for 1st graders of Vocational school. The readability level of reading passages in “Bahasa Inggris” course book was measured using Fry Graph Formula. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative content analysis design. Five reading passages in “Bahasa Inggris” course book are chosen to be analyzed using Fry Graph formula. This study revealed that those five reading passages showed different readability level. The average grade level of the five reading passages in “Bahasa Inggris” course book is on grade ten (10) for native English students while this course book is used for tenth grade of EFL students in Indonesia. In conclusion, the reading passages found in “Bahasa Inggris” course book is readable in terms of language for both 10th grade of native students and 10th grade of EFL students in Indonesia.
