Abstract

Vocabulary has an important role in language teaching. The objective of teaching English vocabulary is to enable the students to use the vocabulary items for real communication. In that case, the English teachers are expected to teach the vocabulary in a communicative way. However, it often happens that in Extensive Reading class, most of the students get bored. They seem to pay attention to the teacher, but actually they only have day dreaming. Most of them get confused to differentiate one vocabulary item to another. And they perform poorly on their tests. It is because in teaching vocabulary, most of the English teachers only explain the surface; they do not give clear explanation, then the students have to memorize them and do the exercises. Based on the reason mentioned above, this study is intended to develop the Vocabulary materials for the second semester of English Department students of Widya Mandala University based on individualized instruction. The materials are designed through Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) program in which the students can study on their own pace. In developing the materials, the writer followed the procedure as suggested by Dick and Carey. The purpose of this study is to develop an effective CALL software for vocabulary materials, especially for topics "Health and Illness" and "Crime and Punishment". Since this study is a developmental research, the evaluation is conducted. Thus, to know whether the program/product is effective or not, it has been proved.
