Abstract

Most Indonesian students are not used to express their opinion orally. They have to learn it still. Nevertheless, it is not possible to force them to be able in doing that in a very short time. Therefore, it is suggested that the students do it in written before they do it orally. By that way, students can also improve their writing ability. Since it is the ability to express opinion that need to be trained students' written opinion will also be given a portion in the scoring. This kind of evaluation is understood under the so called Portfolio Assessment. Portfolio assessment should be able to demonstrate students' progress, effort and accomplishment as well as the students' awareness of the difficulties in the process of writing. This study provide the proof of portfolio assessment's abilities above. The application of portfolio assessment is done in a Writing II class (group A'97) at the English Department of the Catholic university of Widya Mandala Surabaya. The results are very great.
