Abstract

In conducting a successful classroom management, a good communication is important to build because a student learns what they care about and what they understand. Further, in the classroom, teacher is in a position of extreme influence and power over many students In line with the introduction above, the aim of this study is to find out how the talk of the teacher influences the classroom atmosphere. This study is a descriptive qualitative which applied non-participant observation. The data of this study was gained by recording the teaching learning activity delivered by the observed lecturers in the classroom and the data source was the verbal talk from the observed lecturers. Using Tsui-Bik May category system, the writer finds that teacher talk Inform category was most frequently used by the observed lecturers. Inform category was spoken 51 times by lecturer I and 99 times by lecturer 2. Therefore, it can be realized that the talk of the teacher influenced the classroom atmosphere. From their talk, both of observed lecturers created teacher -centered situation in the classroom. This situation made the students more passive than active. This situation was occurred when lecturer gives more information and students rarely ask because of they reluctance. The students seemed waiting for lecturer's explanation and only interested in listening to the lecturer's information rather asking them questions.
