Abstract

In Indonesian high schools, English is one of compulsory subjects that must be learned by all students. Because the sources of the knowledge and information are usually written in its original language, it is expected that high school graduates will be able to read English textbooks on the various subjects at highest education with full understanding. Strang says that reading proficiency is the royal road to knowledge; it is essential to the success in all academic subjects. The writer is eager to know how far the reading habits has helped the Senior High School students in understanding their reading comprehension. Therefore she decides to conduct a study about the correlation between the reading habits and the student’s reading comprehension achievement . The subject of this study is the first year students of SMUK St . Agnes Surabaya belonging to the school year of 1995- 1996 . To obtain the data for this research, she conducts a reading comprehension test and a set of questionnaire . The result of the data analysis shows that the alternative hypothesis was accepted, therefore there is a positive, significant correlation between the existing media and the student's reading comprehension. Since the existing media takes an important role in reading comprehension, the following suggestions are put forth: 1. SMUK teachers should give interesting materials for co-curricular or extra curricular; the materials can be taken from newspaper, magazines or text of songs. 2. Future research is expected whether the existing media plays different role in the other academic subjects ; to extend the subjects of the research so that the findings can be more generalized.
