Abstract

Literature is worth studying as in doing so we explore "The best" in writing and accordingly we learn to think, speak and write by ourselves more effectively. Among many forms of literature, a novel is chosen to be analyzed since in a novel there is room and time for greater variety and elaboration of all elements of fiction such as plot, character, setting and point of view. The writer makes a study on the main character of Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie by using Graham Little's points which includes finding the main character's basic characteristics that cover physical, social relationship, and mental qualities. Then, finding the way each main characters sees himself and other characters, also main characters and the theme. In doing the analysis, the writer reads the novel several times. The text is analyzed through the character's saying, thoughts and acts. She collects the data which suits Little's points. The writer also uses some references concerning Dreiser and his novel 'Sister Carrie’ from some libraries and contributes her own opinion in this subjective analysis of the study. The result of the analysis shows that the main characters in Dreiser’s Sister Carrie are able to embody the theme convincingly and the story is narrated from the objective point of view. It can be inferred that Little's points in character analysis are really applicable and helpful to know everything about the character. After doing the analysis the writer comes to the conclusion concerning the characteristics of the three main characters.
