This study was conducted to describe the readiness of the tenth graders of SMA Dr. Soetomo Surabaya in learning English through the new CBC 2004. The objective of the English teaching in the new CBC 2004 is performing their communicative competence individually through process of evaluation which covered three aspect: cognitive, affective and psychomotor. The underlying factors related to the objective of the study were: the students' readiness, previous knowledge, motivation in learning English, learning style, communicative competence, and the competency-based curriculum. The research design of this study was a mixed-method: qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were converted into percentage and qualitative interpretation. Closed questionnaires, open-ended questionnaires and tests (pretest and post-test) were the instruments of this study. The subjects of the study were forty-seven tenth graders of the school. In analyzing the data, the responses were divided into two categories: positive responses and negative responses. The options "Strongly Agree" and "Agree" were positive responses, whereas "Strongly Disagree" and "Disagree" were negative responses. The analysis of the Pre-test led of the findings that only 27% of the tenth graders of SMA Dr. Soetomo were ready to learn English through the CBC 2004. From the questionnaire result it was found out that the factors influenced their readiness: (1) Student motivation: They had high motivation to learn after knowing if English could be useful for their future life, (2) Teacher performance: They improved and developed their communicative competence confidently if they had a creative, innovative, strict and caring teacher, (3) A comfortable and conducive classroom: they were able to perform their communicative competence well in a comfortable and conducive classroom. The analysis of the Post-test led of the findings that 95% of the tenth graders were ready to learn English through the CBC 2004. In conclusion, the writer hoped that this study could inspire teachers to be more professional, creative, innovative, caring and teaching with love in order to provide a healthy classroom to enhance students' confidence in communicative competence.
