Abstract

English has become an international language that is well appreciated by people. Nowadays, English is learned and taught as a compulsory subject in schools since in elementary school and in kindergarten. Teaching English to children is not an easy task. Children have different ways in learning second or native language. That’s why teachers should have various techniques to make students interested in learning English. Children need to be motivated and to be engaged in teaching learning process actively. This study is a qualitative research in which the writer only observed the class without being directly involved in the teaching-learning process. The writer wanted to know what techniques the elementary teacher used in teaching English. From the observation in SD Bunga Bangsa, it can be concluded that the teacher only used three techniques, media, songs, and storytelling in teaching English to young learners. She often used games and TPR because of some reasons. The writer suggests that the teacher vary her techniques in teaching English. She should use at least these techniques; media, songs, storytelling, games, and TPR. Since this study is a qualitative research, the writer suggests that other researchers do the experimental studies and action research. By doing experimental studies, researchers can see whether or not those techniques are affective.
