Abstract

To be a successful learner of English as a Foreign Language, we need the mastery of the four language skills, namely: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Unfortunately, some of Senior High School Teachers do not teach writing skill because of the limited time provided and to correct the students' written works is considered as a tiring job. Due to the fact that writing is as important as other skills for it is related to the sense of social judgement, English teachers should teach their students writing skills for the mastery of English as a Second Language. In this thesis, the writer wants to discuss the technique of teaching writing by using pictures during the teaching-learning activities. The writer's consideration for using pictures as a means to teach writing is to avoid students' boredom in attending the writing class. Using pictures is one of the techniques avaiable to the English teacher in teaching writing skills. Pictures can brighten the classroom, arouse the students' interests in learning the language, help the students to get a better understanding, and motivate them to learn more enthusiastically so it will help them to study better in the classroom. The writer suggests the use of pictures because they are the easiest media to get and to prepare for the teachers and there are also some advantages of using pictures in teaching writing. Pictures help provide the situation and help the teacher prepare more effective lessons. In teaching writing by using pictures, the writer uses a context-oriented type pictures.
