Abstract

This research focused on the analysis of translation techniques and translation quality of “Jack and The Beanstalk” text in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The objectives of this research were (1) to find out the translation techniques employed by Google Translate in translating English into Indonesian for the text “Jack and the Beanstalk” and (2) to analyze the quality of Google Translate’s translations when translating English into Indonesian for the text “Jack and The Beanstalk”. This type of research is qualitative. The data were obtained by using documentation and questionnaire. The data in this research were 140 sentences from the story text “Jack and The Beanstalk”. The other data were the results of the translation quality assessments done by the 10 respondents. The research findings showed that Google Translate applied 9 translation techniques. They were; literal translation, established equivalent, variation, amplification, adaptation, reduction, transposition, borrowing, and description technique. The results of the questionnaires showed that (1) the average score of accuracy was 33% accurate, 54% was less-accurate, and 13% was inaccurate. (2) The average score of acceptability was 32% acceptable, 50% was less-acceptable, and 18% was unacceptable. (3) The average score of readability was 26% readable, 56% was less-readable, 18% was unreadable. Based on the results obtained, the quality of the translation results by Google Translate was generally less accurate, less acceptable, and less readable. According to the analysis, it can be concluded that Google Translate's translation analysis in achieving the technique and quality of translation results is still not optimal. This is because of the limited features in translating various social dialects (cultures) and a large number of grammatical errors. The researcher suggested that machine translator users should learn various aspects of language to complement each other’s performance in conducting translation tasks.
