Abstract

Active learning is an educational approach where learners are participating actively in the learning process. This learning approach is also reflected in a novel entitled “Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window” by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. Kuyoyanagi wrote the novel based on her real childhood experience of going to a school that implemented an unusual educational system, where the extraordinary founder and principal believed that a teacher's primary role is to encourage students in constructing their own knowledge based on their unique individual experiences. The objective of this research was to identify the depiction of the active learning approach implemented by Mr. Kobayashi in the novel. The main theory used in exploring the events in this novel was the active learning approach which is derived from constructivism. The writer used a qualitative research design by employing literary analysis to achieve the objective. The data contained important fragments of the story which show the form of active learning approach used in the novel. The result of this study found that the learning approach applied by Mr. Kobayashi in the novel contained seven principles of active learning according to Barnes (1989): (1) Purposive, (2) Reflective, (3) Negotiated, (4) Critical, (5) Complex, (6) Situation-driven, (7) Engaged. In other words, Mr. Kobayashi succeeded in implementing the active learning approach in Tomoe Gakuen as Totto-chan and the other students enjoyed studying there.
