Abstract
Literature does not only serve as a content material for all levels of education, but also contains educational issues that readers can learn from. One of literary works which discusses educational issues is “Dead Poets Society”, a written version from a prestigious winning movie with the same title. This study aims to find out the criteria of person-centered approach Mr. Keating applies in the novella “Dead Poets Society”. The theoretical framework to base the analysis is Carl Rogers’ educational theory of a person-centered approach. To collect the data, the researcher explored events in the novella which represent the issues of person-centered approach in teaching performed by Mr. Keating as the main character of the novella. A table of criteria of Carl Rogers’ person-centered approach was employed to assist the process of categorizing the data from the novella. The data analysis was conducted by interpreting the data extracted before drawing conclusions. The results of this study found that there are three criteria of teachers applying a student-centered approach, they are (1) congruence, (2) acceptance, and (3) empathy. Even though, the ending of the novella is very tragic in which Neil, one of Mr. Keating’s students, commits suicide, Mr. Keating is relatively successful in applying a student-centered approach in his teaching so that his students love the subject of literature which has been claimed as a boring lesson.
