Abstract
English as a foreign language class commonly faces several difficulties, such as a lack of cultural content and practical knowledge. This study aims to resolve such linguistic barriers among English foreign learners by analyzing and reflecting on Mind Your Language British TV Series, a comedy sitcom set in an English as a foreign language class. This thesis studies the linguistic stereotypes that appeared in the series to elaborate on the difficulties foreign English learners might face. The study also involves linguistic stereotypes and their influence on the humor of the program. References had shown that humor supports language classes. Ultimately, the research devises three types of linguistic stereotypes, mispronunciation due to regional accents, linguistic misconceptions, and catchphrases. From the discussion, the researcher concludes that most mistakes made by foreign English learners in the series are due to the target language’s complex structure and pronunciation rules, as well as, figurative expressions. To resolve the mentioned matter, the researcher suggests several tips: Start with expressions that are familiar to the foreign learners, emphasize expressions and morphemes which foreign learners are having difficulties learning, provide context for the usage of the expressions, use visual aids, and practice using the expressions.
