Abstract

Listening is a language skill. By listening, students gain information and develop an understanding of what the speaker is saying. According to Hidayat (2013), “Listening is an important ability that must be mastered.” How well someone listens significantly impacts the quality of their relationship with others. Listening is essential for students, especially during the teaching and learning process. However, sometimes listening is challenging because most students lack vocabulary or knowledge of the topic. Regarding these issues, songs are one of the best mediums for learning and teaching listening. The research aims to know English Department students’ beliefs in using English songs to improve their listening skills. This research was a descriptive qualitative study. The participants of the study were the students of the Intermediate and Advanced Listening class, batch 2021. The writer used a questionnaire consisting of fourteen closed-ended questions, adapted from Afriyuninda & Oktaviani (2021), and an interview to collect the data. The findings revealed that students strongly believed that English songs could help them in listening activities. They also believed listening to English songs could help them improve their vocabulary and pronunciation.
