Abstract

Translation has been the key to solving the problem of communicating in different languages. There are few methods used in translation, one of them is Translation Shift. This study aims to identify and describe the types of Category Shift found in the English-to-Indonesian subtitle of Turning Red. This study uses Descriptive Qualitative approach and utilized human instrument. To collect the data, the writer uses the movie transcription and a checklist to identify and classify the data. Translation Shift has two categories: Level Shift and Category Shift, but in this study the writer only focuses on the Category Shift based on the theory by Catford in his book A Linguistic Theory of Translation (1965). After the writer identified and classified the Category Shift, the writer used Translation Quality Assessment rubric by Nababan (et al, 2012) to determine whether translation shift produces high quality translation. The result of this study revealed that there are two hundreds fifty-four occurrences of Category Shift. The highest occurrence belongs to Unit Shift with a hundred eighteen occurrences. Then, structure shift has ninety-three. Thirty occurrences belong to Intra-system shift, and finally thirteen occurrences belong to Class Shift. The writer used the Translation Quality Assessment Rubric by Nababan and found the overall score of Turning Red subtitle translation scored 2,86 out of 3.
