Abstract

It is said that novel is a reflection of human attitude, human life and human behavior. That is the reason why novel is interesting to be analyzed especially through characters. In this study the writer choose John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men with the consideration that Steinbeck is regarded as a writer of great talent, and furthermore, he won the New York Drama Critics; Circle Award Pulitzer Price and the Nobel Prize. By using analytical method or the method which uses sense of perception in analyzing or interpreting particular data, the researcher analyses the two main characters, George and Lennie, in John Steinbeck’s “OF MICE AND MEN”. This analysis is intended to find the characteristic of the downtrodden people from their mental qualities, the relation between the main characters and their occupation. The result of the analysis show that the characteristics of the downtrodden people are reflected in the main characters of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. It was proven from the qualities of the main characters’ life and mentally, they embody the characteristics of the downtrodden people.
