This research is entitled “An Analysis of Commissives Speech Act in the Movie Entitled Cinderella”. The purpose of this research is to know the communicative functions of commissive speech act, to describe the types of commissive speech acts, and to describe how commisive speech acts are used in the movie. This study is a descriptive-qualitative research. The data are chosen in order to answer the research problems. This research focuses on commissive act uttered by the characters found in the movie. The step to get the data is collecting the data from the script of Cinderella movie which contain commissive speech act, reading the dialogue, and classifying the data based on the types of commissive speech act based on Searle and Vanderveken (1985) categories. The next step is classifying the commissive speech act data based on the communicative functions. Then, the use of commissive speech act was analyzed within the pragmatics framework. The findings showed that the communicative functions of the commissive speech act in Cinderella movie consist of statement, question, command, and request. The types of commissive speech act found in Cinderella movie are refuse, threaten, promise, accept, offer, bet, commit, consent, and assure. Commissive speech acts were also expressed in non verbal communication such as the use of gentle tone, touch, bulging eyes, harsh utterance, raising tone, gesture, body posture, and intonation, facial expression. The dominant data of communicative functions is statement of refusal because most of the speakers have higher social status than the hearers. The difference in social status fulfilled the felicitous condition of refusal to happen. The least data found regarding the communicative function is a statement of assurance because the felicitous condition of assurance only fulfilled by a certain character who has a power in giving assurance, e.g. fairies, related to the magical spell. The result of this research is expected to contribute to the pragmatics research of speech acts in general. Next, the research of commissive speech acts in relation to politeness performance could be conducted as a further research.
