Abstract

Language is a communication tool used by people in their daily life. In order to understand the meaning of an utterance and avoid miscommunication, this study aims to identify and analyze the types of directive and expressive illocutionary speech acts uttered by all the characters in the movie ‘Encanto’. This study uses qualitative approach and applies human instrument. To collect the data, the researcher used the movie transcript. The data analysis is done by applying Searle and Vanderverken’s illocutionary speech act classification theory. Directive speech acts are classified into ten types: 1) advise, 2) ask, 3) command, 4) order, 5) pray, 6) permit, 7) recommend, 8) tell, 9) urge, and 10) warn. In addition, there are ten types of expressive speech acts: 1) apologize, 2) complain, 3) compliment, 4) condole, 5) congratulate, 6) greet, 7) thank, 8) praise, 9) protest, and 10) welcome. The results of this study found 118 (one hundred and eighteen) utterances containing directive and expressive speech acts. 74 utterances belong to directive speech acts (advise, ask, command, order, pray, permit, recommend, tell, urge, and warn) and 44 utterances belong to expressive speech acts (apologize, complain, compliment, condole, congratulate, greet, thank, praise, and protest).
