Abstract

Communication through language can express the meaning of what is said. By communicating, people can know someone's personality, and background through the way they speak. The writer finds that the Cak and Ning use certain styles in speaking. This phenomenon attracted the writer to find the speaking styles used by Cak and Ning of Surabaya, and also the reasons that make them use their respective speaking styles. This sociolinguistic study is based on the theories of language and gender, and gender and speaking styles. This study is classified as descriptive because the writer does not set out any tests but only describe an existing phenomenon. In order to get the data, the writer collected the data through the observation of the conversation from Cak and Ning candidates from the video recording the she got from the library of JTV Surabaya for a week. All the data gathered were analyzed based on the parameters: female qualities, gentleness, caring of others, sensitivity and male qualities: aggression, competitiveness, awareness. The findings were discussed under the light of the parameters research questions and underlying theories. From the data analysis and the transcripts of the video recordings she got from the library of JTV Surabaya,it was found out that the subjects under study, Cak and Ning candidates, do talk in certain speaking styles; Caks' speaking styles are aggression and awareness, and Nings' speaking styles are gentleness, aggression, and caring of others. It concluded that Caks' and Nings' speaking styles differ from each other because Caks want to compete more than Nings. Cak's topics are as seen as more meaningful and important than Nings' in formal talk during the qualification. Cak and Ning used mostly Suroboyoan mixed with English and Indonesian. It is suggested that the following researchers, who deal with speaking styles of Cak and Ning Surabaya include wider scope such as subjects and the area of analysis. The writer would also like to suggest the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University to provide more books about language ang gender, and also speaking styles in order to support the next researchers of similar studies.
