Abstract

In general, motivation has a meaning as an encouragement to achieve a goal or achievement. Based on this explanation, it can be seen that motivation is quite important and has a considerable influence on the learning process, especially in learning a second language such as English. Motivation itself, can arise both from within and the surrounding environment of the subject. On the other hand, there are other factors can also influence the learning process, such as the ability to learn, family background, and effort in learning. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant correlation between motivation and academic achievement of English Department students in the Reading D course. This research is correlation research, where the writer wants to know the correlation between two variables – academic achievement and degree of motivation of English Department students. The academic achievement of the students were taken from students’ final score in the Reading D course. While for the degree of motivation, the writer used a questionnaire consisting of 50 questions based on the indicator of Santrock (2016). To obtain data on degree of motivation of the students, the writer distributed it to 30 students of English Department in 2019. After getting the two required data, the two data will be correlated using Pearson’s Product Moment. This study also shows the results of the correlation coefficient of -0.13 or can be said that there is no correlation between the two variables. Based on the results of this study, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected, and the null hypothesis (Ho) was accepted. It can be concluded that there was no significant correlation between motivation and academic achievement of English students in the Reading D course.
