Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the language components that has to be mastered by the students in learning English. The students must have a lot of vocabularies to mastery all skills in learning English. Learning vocabulary is important because it can support the students’ ability in English. Without vocabulary, the students have a difficulty to comprehend the meaning of the words in the text, cannot recognize the meaning and listen to the English word from the speakers, cannot compose the words into their writing skill successfully and get difficulty in speak English fluently. Because of the pandemic of COVID-19 in Indonesia, to reduce the spread of the virus and protect the teacher and students to keep health, the Government changes the learning process activities become an online learning until the time that will be determine if the number of COVID-19 in Indonesia decreases and can be controlled. It means that the students have to stay at home to do the learning process activities so they do not have to come to the school or campus.The aims of this study is to find out the challenges and opportunities faced by students in Academic Vocabulary course in learning vocabulary online. This study uses descriptive methodology and uses questionnaire and interview as the instruments. The participants of this study were 19 students from one entire class and the lecturer of Academic Vocabulary students in English Education Study Program of Widya Mandala in the batch of 2020/2021 academic year. The finding of this study shows that the teaching and learning process of the online lesson in Academic Vocabulary seems to present more opportunities than challenges. It appears that the online Academic Vocabulary lesson in Widya Mandala has been conducted well. Students seems to prefer online Academic Vocabulary lesson in terms of the learning strategy, material, and interaction. More improvement can be made in terms of the assessment.
