Abstract

The Literacy approach is just applied in year 2007/2008. For English subject, the approach introduces the various text genres, with the emphasis in students’ literacy competences, including their competences in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. In this research, the writer wants to find out the ability of the year 2007/2008 grade X students of St.Louis I High School in identifying and writing recount. There are two objectives in this study: one is to find out whether the students are able to identify a recount and its generic structure (orientation, event(s), and re-orientation), the second is to find out whether they are able to write a recount text with proper generic structure. After surveying 43 subjects by giving them recount reading questions and asking them to write a recount text, the writer finds that most of the students are able to write a recount text with proper and complete generic structure, but many of them are having difficulty in identifying a recount text and its generic structure. Based on this finding, then, the writer suggests a more collaborate teaching of recount text genre by using the four-step teaching learning cycle, giving more emphasis on the first two steps: building knowledge of the field and modeling of the text, so that the students can identify a recount text and its generic structure better.
