Abstract

The existence of globalization makes people have to be able to speak an international language, English. In this era, English is an indispensable language because English is an active universal language. English itself includes several aspects that are needed for smooth communication. In the Department of English, the demand for the use of English is also getting higher. Students are required to be able to understand lectures in English and speak the language. One of the best ways to teach English to students is to use English in English classes. If students are forced to use the target language, students will be more familiar with the language. In connection with the reality above, this study aims at finding out English Department students' perceptions towards the total use of English in the Teaching and Learning process by answering the research questions “What are the students' perceptions on the use of total English in the classroom?" and “What are the influences of the use of total English in the classroom?” This research applied a sequential mix method— a quantitative method to answer the perceptions and qualitative to figure out the influences. The researcher used a questionnaire (with 25 items of closed-ended question and two open-ended question) and an interview as the instruments to collect data. The respondents of the questionnaire were 80 English Department students of Widya Mandala Catholic University covering each semester. The findings show that almost all students have positive perceptions about the use of total English in the teaching and learning process. Furthermore, the use of total English in the teaching and learning process has a positive influence on students, especially in terms of speaking and listening.
