Abstract

Learning literature is not only interesting but also important. Literature can be interesting because it gives pleasure and enjoyment for the students. Literature is one of the subjects which prepare students to know about the culture of English speaking countries (Levine and Adelman, 1993:143). In accordance with Levine and Adelman, Little (1963:1) states that man have always found literature essential because the literature of a people is the principal elements of its culture. It contains the record of the people’s values, their thoughts their problems and conflicts, in short, their whole way of life. A play is chosen to be analyzed since a play can give the writer a lesson about life more clearly than other literary works. The writer chooses one of Arthur Miller plays entitled A View From the Bridge as the subject of her study since the story deals with things that really happen in the real world. It portrays the tragedy of common man that usually reveal in societies these days. The tragedy itself may teach people to be stronger in dealing with their problems. This study under report is conducted to answer the question, “How does the main character, Eddie Corbone show his illicit jealousy?” To do this the writer then collected the data; utterances that show the illicit jealousy of the main character from the play and analyze the data by using her competence as the main parameter to decide the presented proper of illicit jealousy. From the data analysis, the writer found that there were three different attitudes showing Eddie Corbone’s jealousy. First, his being possessive to his own niece. Second his being dishonest to his wife. Third, his being arrogant. The writer hopes that her analysis can give contribution to other readers who want to analyze literature especially concerning the character’s life background. She also expert that this study will give some important illustrations about a family conflict with all existing problems. The writer also hopes this study arouse readers’ interest to analyze literary works so that other people can understand more about literature.
