Abstract

To develop students’ reading comprehension skill, a reading course trains the students with some relevant reading comprehension questions. This study aims to classify the types of the reading comprehension questions contained in “Concepts for Today” textbook and compares the found types of reading comprehension questions to the learning objective of Reading B course. The attempt to classify the reading comprehension types is based on Barrett’s Taxonomy. According to Barrett’s Taxonomy, there are five types of reading comprehension questions: 1) Literal Comprehension (Recognition and Recall), 2) Reorganization, 3) Inferential Comprehension, 4) Evaluation, and 5) Appreciation. There are 230 reading comprehension questions in the “Concepts for Today” textbook which can be classified by Barrett’s Taxonomy checklist and eight learning objectives of Reading B course. The first findings of the analysis show that the five questions types were found in the textbook. There are 100 (43,5%) questions of Literal Comprehension, 6 (2,6%) questions of Reorganization, 85 (37%) questions of Inferential Comprehension, 35 (15,2%) questions of Evaluation, and 4 (1,7%) questions of Appreciation. The second findings of the analysis showed that there is Literal Comprehension (12,5%), Reorganization (12,5%), Inferential Comprehension (62,5%), and Evaluation (12,5%) in the eight learning objectives of Reading B course. In short, “Concepts for Today” textbook contains all comprehension questions types based on Barrett’s Taxonomy. Some questions (64,6%) of the reading comprehension questions match the learning objective more, some supplementary reading comprehension questions need to be added to the textbook.
