Abstract

Speaking is one of four important skills to be mastered when we want to master English. But in the researcher’s perception, English Department students have difficulties on master the speaking skill. They are still thinking that speaking skill is really difficult to be mastered. The students are afraid to speak because they are afraid to make a mistake in speaking. Debate comes and might be the solution for this case. Debate itself has been implemented on Speaking C’s course outline In connection with the reality above, this study aims at finding out English Department students’ perception towards debate activity in Speaking C by answering the research question. It is What is the English Department students’ perception towards debate activity in Speaking C? This research was a descriptive qualitative study. To collect the research data, the researcher used questionnaire (with 28 items of open-ended question and one closed-ended question) and interview. The respondents of this research were 36 English Department students of Widya Mandala Catholic University of the fourth semester who joined Speaking in the academic year of 2017. Based on findings, it can be said that students believe that speaking C, especially debate activity have a positive perception towards debate activity because debate for them are really good for their speaking ability, manage their anxiety and knows a lot of information from debate.
