Abstract
Language is used to communicate with others by people, since communication is one of the important parts from the human’s life. As a universal form of communication, language can be divided into two big parts: spoken and written languages and speech acts can be used to learn more about language. The writer chooses songs as the subject of her analysis and does an analysis to find out the illocutionary acts that can be found in the lyrics of the songs in Flicker album by Niall Horan and the underlying reason Niall Horan composed the album. The study shows that there are four types of illocutionary acts according to Searle (1977) that can be found in three songs from the Flicker album. They are representative, commissive, directive, and expressive. The result shows that only declarative type that does not appear in all three songs in the album. The reason is declarative that can only be used by someone who is authorized by institutional framework, for example a pastor baptizing the church. Moreover, the writer tried to apply this study to the field of education. This study can be beneficial for those who are interested in deepening their vocabulary and also help the students, the teachers and people whom are interested to understand better about literature, especially songs.
