Abstract

The use of the first language in the English Language Teaching seems cannot be separated in the class. The first language helps the students to comprehend the material. Therefore, the first language may become resources for some reasons. However, the overuse of the first language may also become hindrances for the students. In this study, the first language discussed is Bahasa Indonesia. At the English Education Study Program, Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya, there is a subject called Intensive Course. It is a compulsory subject for the freshmen students in the first semester. In this subject, the lecturers and the students are expected to use English as much as possible. It is due to the Intensive Course become a foundation subject for the students to continue the further subject in the next semester. However, not all the freshmen students have good English proficiencies when they entered college. Thus, Bahasa Indonesia could help them in learning English. The researcher conducted this study to find out the students’ perceptions on the use of Bahasa Indonesia in Intensive Course classes. The participants of the study were 50 students in three classes who joined Intensive Course at the English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya at the academic year of 2018/2019. The data were collected using questionnaire and interview protocol. The questionnaire was analyzed by classifying based on the topics using descriptive statistic method. Then, the result was presented in table form. The interview data was transcribed and it was analyzed based on the topics on the questionnaire The data analysis led to the research findings that 77,25% perceived Bahasa Indonesia as resources. However, 70,25% also perceived English as a major language in IC class. It shows that the students have good perception on the use of Bahasa Indonesia, but they realized that the overuse of Bahasa Indonesia could limit them from English exposure. Thus, the students admitted that the more they got an English exposure, the more the English proficiencies they got. It showed from the result of the questionnaire. The implication of this study is Bahasa Indonesia could be used in the class when there was a difficult idea or material to be explained, however both the lecturers and the students should used English as much as they could in order to have good English.
