Abstract

Writing is considered as the most difficult skill among the four basic language skills. Writing is a skill that anyone can learn to manage. Descriptive writing is one of difficult writing genre that captures both details and wholeness so that the writer has to select specific and vivid details to make the readers see what the writer sees. In order to make writing an easy work, the writer decided to introduce a new technique for writing especially for descriptive writing by using Mind Mapping technique in pre-writing stage where students have to specify the task or planning and outline or collect data or make notes. Mind Mapping works in exploring the creativities and ideas. In this study, the writer conducted this research to find out whether Mind Mapping technique affects the eighth graders’ descriptive writing achievement significantly. In conducting the study, the writer used a quasi-experimental method with single group pre-test and post-test design. This experimental design is very useful in addressing evaluation questions about the effectiveness and impact of programs. First, the students were given pretest. Second, they were given four treatments and the last they were given post-test which was the same as the pre- test. The data that were analyzed: the students’ worksheet of pre-test and post-test. While calculating the data between the pre-test and post- test score, the writer found that H0 is rejected because tcalc > t(α/2. n-1) and Ha is accepted. The students improve their score. It means that Mind Mapping technique affects the eighth graders’ descriptive writing achievement significantly. Mind mapping technique is very useful in pre-writing stage. Hopefully, the findings of this study can be for the teaching – learning and further researches.
