Abstract

In this globalization era, English has been introduced as an international language. The teaching of English has been going for years in Indonesia. There are four skills that are learnt: listening, speaking, reading and writing, and language components: pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. Writing is an important and difficult skill to be mastered, especially for young learners. Most students in young ages have difficulties in making and arranging sentences. Moreover, they also get confused in getting ideas while they are writing. To overcome the problems, the writer would like to have certain teaching techniques in writing by using picture series. The writer chose writing using picture series to improve the fifth graders’ writing achievement. By using picture series, students will be more interested in writing a story based on the pictures provided, picture series can also arise students’ motivation to write. This study used the single group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this study were the fifth graders of SD YPPI IV Surabaya of academic year 2009 - 2010 in class VA. Before giving the treatments, the writer did the try out to another class, VB. After having the try out, the writer consulted the results whether the materials and time allocation were suitable for the students. After that, the writer continued by giving the pretest, three times of treatments and finally gave the posttest to see their writing achievement. After collecting the data, the writer did the calculation using the formula of t-test at 5% (0.05) to get the result of the data collection. From the result of the calculation, the writer found that the post test scores was higher than the pre test, and it showed a significant difference between the pre test and the posttest. The Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In other words, there is a significant difference of the writing achievement between the pre test and post test. It can be concluded that picture series can enhance the writing ability of the students. Picture series give more positive influence on students’ writing achievement.
