Abstract

Many interesting opinions often expressed verbally by fellow students about the teaching profession indicating that a lot of them are not so keen to be English teachers, or even they have never had any intention at all to become English teachers makes the writer interested in conducting a study of their motivation to become English teachers. Often, however, it was found that some of the students did not even know the purpose of the English Department. This is quite ironic since the aim of the English Department is to prepare English teachers who are competent, good in morality, and able to learn through the whole life in catching up with the development of science, culture, and information technology (FKIP Unika Widya Mandala Surabaya, Pedoman Akademik 2009-2010: 74). It means that every graduate of the English Department is expected to become an English teacher who has the ability to excel in their field and contribute to the society. In response to this, the writer decides to conduct a study entitled ―A Survey of the English Department Students’ Motivation towards the Teaching Profession before and after the Teaching Practice Program‖ to see if the the Teaching Practice, as its function as the only course that allows students to feel the real experience of being a teacher, can make students interested and increase their motivation to become professional English teachers. In addition to making a survey about students’ motivation to become English teachers, the writer also studies issues related to the Teaching Practice which become favorites or disliked by the students. This xi study has found that there is a small increase in terms of motivation of students regarding their desire to become professional English Teachers after they have completed their Teaching Practice. It is also found that 93.94% of the total respondents state that in their opinion, the Teaching Practice is necessary and important in increasing their motivation to become English teachers.
