Abstract

Institution of training and education is a means to equip a person with knowledge and skill. People take education as an investment for their future focuses. As an investment, education results in human capital as the outcomes. As a part of bigger society, it is inevitable that investing in education, in this case learning English, will affect a person’s social status. How a person’s social status develops depends on several factors. One of them is occupation. Even though social status might be interpreted differently among people, they come up with a consent that they expect better achievement in this social status factor than their parents’ achievement or their origin state. This study is a descriptive-qualitative study using online questionnaire to find out the respondents’ social backgrounds, social status expectations and effort to achieve the expectations. The respondents of this study are the 8th semester students of English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya. The results of the study show that the respondents are from two categories; working family and non-working family. The respondents show inconsistency in expectation as they change their aspiration into ones which suit the language skills learned at college. In order to achieve their expectations, the respondents use higher education as a means to take the leap. However, the respondents also agree that undergraduate degree is enough for them to start applying for jobs according to their interests. The results of the study show that after going through learning process in the English Department, the students have become more pragmatic, instead of idealist.
