Abstract

Debate is one useful speaking activity which can help the students to improve their speaking skill. This study aims at finding the students’ perception of debate as a speaking activity in Speaking III course. The instruments used in this research were questionnaire and interview. The researcher distributed the questionnaire to 45 students who have joined and passed Speaking III course and chose five of them to be the interviewees. The researcher found 95,7% of all responses from the respondents were positive. In addition, the researcher found that some students were not satisfied with their team work even though they could choose the team members by themselves. Because of that, the researcher suggests the lecturers to choose the team members equally based on the students’ abilities so they could help each other in a team. The researcher suggests the English Department to maintain debate in Speaking III course because it has many benefits for the learners. The other suggestion is a suggestion for the students to have more initiative to learn more about debate so they could get the benefits of debate which are very useful for their speaking skill. Furthermore, the researcher suggests the future investigator who wants to choose the similar topic to find the students’ perception before and after joining the course.
