Abstract

Background In recent years, there has been a change in the education of professional medical doctors. Nowadays, the education emphasizes not only for hard skills (academic knowledge), such knowledge and clinical skills, but also soft skills (life skills or human interaction skills), such communication skills, critical skills, empathy, ethical reasoning, ability as team leader and as team player, and a lot more. Skills of ethical reasoning needs to be leamt and practiced in real condition. Faculty of Medicine Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya, we make a program called "Ethical Dilemmas Discussion" in form of focused group discussion and expert lecture. The "Ethical Dilemmas Discussion" is designed for seven semesters, since our medical students attended in school until they become bachelor in medicine. Aim of this program is to improve skills of ethical reasoning thus they will able to manage and make betterithe best decision ethical problems in the future. Although ethical reasoning is known to be leamt, the effectiveness of "Ethical Dilemmas Discussion" to improve the grade of ethical reasoning skills is not yet known. Aim The proposed in this preliminary study is to explore the effectiveness of "Ethical Dilemmas Discussion" to improve the grade of ethical reasoning skills after a year program. Methods Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in the proposed study, with pre-post group with control design. First year medical students were randomly to be our respondents. Questioners were given 3 times :1) before (pretest) the "Ethical Dilemmas Discussion", 2) intermediate test - after one semester doing the "Ethical Dilemmas Discussion) and 3) post test after two semester doing focused group discussion and expert lecture for ethical dillema. Questioners had two types, first type was general situation and second one was personal situation. For control group, we also asked the first year medical student of Atma Jaya University as respondents whom were given ethical knowledge in Humaniora Block. Results This study were followed by the first year medical students from Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya and University of Atma Jaya Jakarta whom aged around 17-20 years old. Composition of gender in both of the group was 65% female dan 35% male. Analyzed the questioneries that the first year should fullfill using SPSS 14.0. The grade of ethical reasoning skills was significantly improved for ethical problem both in general dilemma situation and ethical problem. Conclusion "Ethical Dilemmas Discussion" program was significantly improved the grade of ethical reasoning skills. The complexity theme of "Ethical Dilemmas Discussion" will conduct to be increased in next discussions and expert lectures, thus the gradc of ethical reasoning skills not only in general dilemmas situation but also in pcrsonal and clinical dilemmas situation. Thus this programme will give the medical student knowledge how to become professional especially in facing ethical problems in the future.
