Abstract

One of the qualities of Malala Yousafzai, found in autobiography I am Malala, is courage. This thesis aims to find out the signs of Malala’s courage and the factor that influence her to be courageous. The theoretical framework of the analysis is based on the objective theory of M. H. Abrams that focuses on the intrinsic elements of the autobiography and literature. The analysis then shows that the autobiography took place in Swat Valley, Pakistan, from 1997 to 2012 and in Birmingham, England, in 2012 to 2013. Malala portrayed herself as a young girl who had to struggle to pursue education when Taliban banned it. To answer the problem statements, the writer uses Circle of Courage and Reciprocal Determinism as coined by Bandura in his Social Cognitive Theory. By using Circle of Courage, the writer found out that Malala has shown her courage since she was a little girl. Meanwhile, by using Reciprocal Determinism, the writer found out that her family is the first factor why Malala can be courageous. The second factor is Malala herself. She had a determination to struggle for what she wanted. Hence, those are the factors underlying Malala’s courage. They are her family and more importantly, herself.
